5. Really, what is he fighting for?
He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.
He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.
6. How that can be possible?
He is advocating for a Bill, The Lok Pal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), bureaucrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.
Key features of proposed bill
- A central government anti-corruption institution called “Lokpal”, supported by state institutions called “Lokayukta” will be set up
- Like the Supreme Court and the Election Commission, they will be completely independent of the governments. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence their investigations.
- Members will be appointed by judges, private citizens, and constitutional authorities through a transparent and participatory process.
- Investigations in each case will have to be completed in one year. Trials should be completed in the following year, meaning the total process will take place within two years.
- Any loss that a corrupt person caused to the government will be recovered at the time of conviction.
- Help to common citizen: If any work of any citizen is not done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant.
- Any complaint against any officer of Lokpal shall be investigated and, if found to be substantive, will result in the the officer being dismissed within two months.
- The existing anti-corruption agencies (CVC, departmental vigilance and the anti-corruption branch of CBI) will be merged into Lokpal. Lokpal will have complete powers and authority to independently investigate and prosecute any officer, judge or politician.
- The agency will also provide protection to whistleblowers who alert it of potential corruption cases.
7. It’s an entirely new thing right..?
In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit their theft (corruption).
8. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?
The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.
Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the LOK PAL BILL. 50% government participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.
A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.
Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.
Anna not to campaign in poll-bound states: Bedi
Ailing social activist Anna Hazare won't be campaigning in five poll-bound states as he had planned earlier, his aide Kiran Bedi said Thursday.
Bedi, a core Team Anna member, told reporters here that Hazare was recovering in a hospital but has been advised rest by doctors.
"Anna needs complete rest. Doctors have advised him not to travel. My opinion is also that Anna should be taking rest. So he won't be travelling or campaigning," Bedi said.
Team Anna had threatened to campaign against those parties that opposed the Jan Lokpal bill -- their version of the Lokpal bill -- in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur that are going to polls in the next two months. The campaign was particularly targeted against the Congress.
Hazare has been in a Pune hospital since Dec 31 after he developed health complications due to acute chest congestion.
Bedi said that the 74-year-old activist was recovering and his condition was stable. The former police officer, who is one of the closest Hazare aides, said that the core group of their team would meet Saturday to devise its further strategy.
Hazare due to his ailing health was earlier forced to call off his three-day scheduled hunger strike in Mumbai Dec 28, less than 36 hours after he began it.
He had threatened to launch a sit-in outside the residences of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, a party general secretary. This was also cancelled after Hazare's health deteriorated in Mumbai.
Anna Hazare calls off fast, cancels jail bharo campaign
Smarting under poor response and bad health, Anna Hazare today called off his fast a day ahead of schedule and repeated his threat to campaign against Congress in the five poll-bound states for not brining a strong Lokpal.
The 74-year-old activist made the surprise announcement midway through his three-day fast at MMRDA grounds which reported poor attendance of people for the second continuous day, in stark contrast the mass swelling in Delhi earlier this year during his three fasts.
Hazare did not make any reference to the earlier plans of coming to Delhi for a dharna of the residence of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and about the jail bharo agitation (filling up of jails) after that.
“…Whatever we are seeing today in Parliament is tragic. So I have decided to call off the fast today. There is only one way now. We will make a programme in the five states and go and awaken people there. I will tell them don’t vote for traitors,” he told a sparsely attended protest meeting in the afternoon.
“Now two years are left for the general elections. In between, I will go to various parts of the country and keep awakening the people till next general elections,” he said.
The ending of the fast by Hazare, who was having fever of 100 degree F, came doctors advised him to call off his protest saying continuing it will lead to kidney failure.
Hazare said he was already fasting four days before the start of the protest strike yesterday here.
Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal replying to questions from media also said that they have withdrawn the proposed jail bharo campaign for the time being, but will campaign against the Congress in the forthcoming assembly elections in 5 states.
